01 · AHCIP outside Alberta
What Alberta Health Care covers once you leave the province
A trip to Edmonton doesn't take you out of province at all, so AHCIP applies as usual. Elsewhere in Canada, it generally covers medically necessary hospital and physician care, usually billed directly between provinces. Ambulance, prescriptions and some services can still cost you money.
Outside Canada, AHCIP pays only limited, set amounts toward emergency care, based on Alberta rates. In Phoenix, Las Vegas or Seattle the real bill can be many times higher, and AHCIP won't pay to bring you home. Alberta Health advises buying extra travel health insurance before you leave the country.
Rules on emergency claims and on how long you can be absent and stay covered are set by the province and may change. Check alberta.ca before each trip.
02 · Medical vs cancellation
Travel medical vs trip cancellation: know which problem you're solving
Emergency medical cover pays eligible costs if you get sick or injured away from home: emergency rooms, hospital stays, doctors, ambulance and, when medically needed, a flight back to Calgary. It's the core cover for any trip across the border.
Trip cancellation and interruption reimburses prepaid, non-refundable costs if a covered event (for example, a sudden illness or a family emergency) stops you going or cuts your trip short. That could be flights, a Scottsdale rental, show tickets bundled into a Vegas package or a Cancún all-inclusive.
Adventurous Albertans should also check activity exclusions. Some policies limit cover for skiing off marked runs, scuba diving or other higher-risk sports, so read the wording before you pack the gear.
03 · Single vs annual
Single-trip or multi-trip annual? Calgary's frequent-flyer maths
Calgary has a lot of repeat short-haul travellers: an energy-sector trip to Houston or Chicago, a Vegas weekend, a Seattle getaway. For them, a multi-trip annual plan covering every trip in a year (up to a maximum per trip) can beat buying a policy every time, and you won't forget one on a last-minute trip.
If you fly once a year, a single-trip plan matched to your exact dates is usually enough. Either way, compare prices, check that the annual plan's per-trip limit covers your longest trip, and add separate cancellation cover for the big-ticket booking if the annual plan doesn't include enough.
04 · Snowbirds & the U.S.
Arizona snowbirds, Vegas weekends and other U.S. trips
Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa and Palm Springs draw Albertans for weeks or months every winter. Two checks matter. First, AHCIP's absence rules, which limit how long you can be out of the province and keep your coverage. Second, whether a long-stay plan covers the whole stay. Longer trips usually involve a medical questionnaire, and pricing reflects age and health history.
Short U.S. trips still need cover. A two-night Las Vegas trip or a Seattle weekend puts you under U.S. hospital pricing as soon as you land, and a single-trip medical plan costs little next to that risk.

05 · Pre-existing conditions
Pre-existing conditions: stability comes first
Most travel medical plans only cover a pre-existing condition if it has been stable for a period set in the policy before you leave. Things that can break stability include new symptoms, changes to medication or dose, new treatment and pending tests. The exact definition varies from policy to policy.
Complete any medical questionnaire honestly and in full, because errors are a common reason claims get denied. If you manage an ongoing condition, ask the insurer or a licensed advisor about your situation. This guide can't do that for you.
06 · Timing
When to buy: as soon as you've paid
Buy cancellation cover right after you book. It only protects you from the day you buy it, so anything that happens before then isn't covered. Some benefits also require buying within a set window after your first deposit, which is worth knowing if you book spring-break or post-Stampede trips months ahead.
Travel medical can be bought any time before departure, but buy it before you leave Alberta. Some policies restrict cover or add waiting periods if purchased after you've left.
07 · Where you're flying
Popular trips from Calgary International
Here's how YYC's busiest routes line up for travel insurance, with links to our fare and timing guides.
- Phoenix & Arizona
The classic Alberta snowbird destination. Long stays need a plan that covers the whole trip, and U.S. medical costs make medical cover essential.
- Las Vegas
A short weekend, but still U.S. health care. If you go often, a multi-trip annual plan can be the simplest option.
- Seattle & Chicago
City breaks and business trips. Medical cover is the priority, and frequent flyers should compare annual plans.

- Cancún
Spring-break all-inclusives are prepaid, so cancellation cover matters. Check excursion and water-sport exclusions.
- Within Canada — Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton
Edmonton is in Alberta, so there's no provincial gap. For Toronto or Vancouver, AHCIP generally applies but may not cover ambulance or prescriptions. Cancellation cover protects prepaid trips.

08 · FAQ
Travel insurance questions from Calgary travellers
Does Alberta Health Care cover me in the U.S.?
Only limited, set amounts for emergency care, based on Alberta rates. U.S. hospitals usually charge much more, and you'd pay the difference. Alberta Health recommends private travel health insurance. Check alberta.ca for current rules.
Do I need travel insurance to fly Calgary to Edmonton?
Not for health coverage, because Edmonton is in Alberta and AHCIP applies as usual. You might still want cancellation cover if you've prepaid a lot of non-refundable costs.
Is a multi-trip annual plan worth it for Vegas and Seattle weekends?
For frequent short trips it can be simpler and may cost less than buying policies one at a time. Compare prices, and check the per-trip day limit.
I'm wintering in Arizona. What should I check?
AHCIP's rules on how long you can be out of the province, and a private plan that covers your whole stay. Longer trips usually involve health questions, so answer them accurately.
When should I buy cancellation insurance?
Soon after you book and pay. Cover only starts when you buy it, and some benefits depend on buying within a set time after your first deposit.
